Hmmm...interesting....I have never seen a 7984 before, but it LOOKS very 
much like a 6/12GE5, which is used in the Heathkit single-banders 
(HW-12/22/32) where a pair of them are good for 200 watts PEP output.

The HW-16 uses one, and outputs 50 watts easily enough, and, furthermore, 
I have NEVER used one up yet. It runs 90 watts input with no strain. 

I bought a sleeve of 5 NIB 6GE5s off eBay several years ago for my HW-16 
and still have them in the sleeve, the original one still going strong.

You might consider a 6GE5 or a 12GE5 in your experiments, David. They 
are a super little tube.
