Speaking generally it's a wave-meter, using a one-valve detector.
See circuit diagram attached.
I understand that the last character in the designation (in your case
"D") indicates the frequency covered.
There should be a calibration chart (graph) in the door, and from this
you can see the frequency YOUR "D" unit covers.
I'd be interested to know that.
In the circuit attached you'll see a reference to 150 to 225 MHz.
That's "my" addition, but it only applies to one specific model from
the 906 series (as far as I can figure).
So - one of these was sold by auction at the local "Westlakes" Radio
Club a few weeks ago, and I was one of two fellows bidding.
I was standing next to Joe and asked him "Do you really want it, or
are you just bidding".
He wanted it - so I said "It's yours. I'm out".
It wasn't mint, but it wasn't bad either. The leather handle was
broken, but the case and dial were in excellent condition.
Later Joe told me his calibration chart was for a unit BELOW 30MHz,
not 150+ MHz
