[ARC5] ARC-5 Transmitter--Overproduction in WWII

Hi

Granted the creation is not that pretty, but it obviously served some function and being that it's a 30 meter design, it's certainly not a product of the 50s but someone's idea of getting something operating on a "New Band" and despite the use of a Command Set chassis....at least the builder did something other that twist a few knobs. Kudus to the fellow who whipped the thing together. Hell, I even bid on it.. As to the sacrificial Command set, I watched that 1946 movie, "The Best Years Of Their Lives" last night and one of the great shots in the film was when the protagonists flew over one of the many WWII aircraft bone yards where thousands of planes were arranged in rows stretching almost to the horizon. The commentary suggested that many of these planes went directly from the factory to the bone yard for demolition. Imagine now that every one of these planes had be outfitted with Command Sets and other radios we all have learned to love. One reference books suggests that there were in excess of 3 million command sets produced let alone all the other avionics that saw immediate obsolescence in 1946.

Cheers

Ouch! I'm glad I viewed that on an empty stomach!

The perspective of the 1950s was a lot different than that of 2013.
