[ARC5] Ball Bearings

Tom,
I think the only way these balls can come out is if the unit experiences severe mechanical shock. (Think hard landing?). I had a tx years ago with those balls rolling around inside. I bought it at a dimly lit shop on Canal St. NYC in '69 with my buddy Al. I had to remove the capacitor and unsolder the frame to dismantle it. I found all the balls but one but I put it all together again and it worked. Not accurate but worked. Now, I would look on ePay for a replacement as the rebuild is a pain I no longer have the patience for.
 YMMV.
 Good luck,
                  Jay KE6PPF

Subject: [ARC5] Ball Bearings

Does anyone know the size of the ball bearings in the VFO capacitor on a
BC-696-A? I mic them at about .062" and it looks the link below carries
them. Is it common for them to just fall out or does dried up grease cause
this? Also the front capacitor in the transmitter that is connected by way
of the flexible shaft has the same issue. I have a brand variable cap I
could drop in there but I like to do things the hard wayJ
