Robert,
You bring up an important point.  I got carried away by the signal flow and channelization, and I forgot about the mechanics of the adapter plate.  I lost the original email that started this thread so can't be sure about clearance around the adapter.  If it can't clear the MX-20/ARC-5 power adapter drawer, as well as the antenna connection, then all bets are off as the MX-20 provided all electrical connection, except antenna, between the ARR-1 and the R-24.

  Studying the front quarter view photographs of the R-24/ARC-5 and the 
  C-131/AR mounted on the front of an ARA or AN/ARC-5 communications receiver, it 
  appears that the adaptor plate mounted to the front of the receiver in place 
  of the tuning dial would just miss the antenna selector switch cover.  So 
  you could probably mount the C-131 on an R-24.  Or for that matter, an R-23.

  However, there is no known evidence that they ever did.
