The fourth photo shows a blurry R-26/ARC-5 tag, Wayne. At least some of
the receivers modified for the Yardney tuner have surfaced that had
their original tag removed from the cover and sported a black painted
tag with a designation like R-26M.

It was a kludge from the start but filled an urgent need, mostly in the
Pacific. Internally it is beautifully built and performs its job as
well as the ART-13 autotune feature which it was designed to support..
The kludgey part was forced on the manufacturer because of the need to
use existing ARC-5 receivers. I'm a little surprised that they didn't
use the ARB as a base for the set, but the little ARC-5 receivers are
pretty decent performers, as everyone here already knows. The
manufacturer actually did an amazing job of the mod kit, considering the
constraints - it was designed in such a way that it could be
accomplished at lower echelons without too much of a problem. Although
the much more expensive Collins AN/ARR-15 eventually supplanted the
Yardney, it lasted long enough to spawn at least three control boxes,
shown at http://aafradio.org/flightdeck/box.htm
