 I took a lot of physics in college, and there, plus in a couple of books I've read since on physics, instruction made it clear that Einstein's acceptance of M-Ms' expreimental results was a key step when everyone else in the physics 'establishment' was convinced the aether just had to be there and would eventually be revealed by a sufficiently sensitive experiment. M-M tried numerous refinements of their experimental apparatus, seeking the necessary improvement.
