As you know, the basic problem with using a BC-453 as the main receiver is
the low IF, which would make images at frequencies much above about 40
meters really bad.
He would have had to make some sort of at least double-conversion system,
if not triple conversion.
I don't know if you are aware of an article (with followups) which was printed
in QST magazine a long time ago which used a BC-453, a BC-454 and a
BC-455 to build a triple-conversion "ARC-5" receiving setup for 80 and 40
meters. If you don't have that, I can get you a copy in PDF format.
In fact, I have two of those complete setups here, both in poor condition.
The articles may give you some ideas, however.
I also have a BC-454 here which I worked on for quite some time, and talked
about it on this list, which had been converted to cover the 10 meter band. I
have written the entire adventure up as an article for ER Magazine, and Ray
will print it within the next few months. It covers 28 to 30 MHz, and even with
the 12SK7s, has good sensitivity and "good enough" selectivity. It is also
stable, which surprised me.
