I wasn't aware of that, but I met Bob Leo at the WIMU hamfest a couple 
of times back in the 70s, and he's truly a ham's ham...

The "Weaver Method" aka third method of SSB generation is described in 
Don Stoner's "New Sideband Handbook" that was published by CQ. It was 
used commercially in the Redifon GR-400 four-channel 
transmitter/receiver, which is pictured, and to my knowledge, that's the 
only time.       The easiest article to access is the Sept. 1957 QST 
article on the "The third method of SSB" by W1PNB, which can be 
downloaded by ARRL members.    The D.K. Weaver paper appeared in 
Proceedings of the IRE, Dec. 1956.

It's a perfectly elegant method and nowadays in the era of SDR, 
everything is phasing!
