When I worked for Agilent we were woking on a 60 GHz gigabit ethernet radio link. Range was 150 meters and used lens antennas. It was pretty neat work as part of our lab was on the roof. The radios were connected to the indoor lab via fiberoptic cable to a bit error rate tester.
After getting the prototype working our boss Bill Sulivan, now CEO, cancelled the project.
60 GHz is a lisence free band because of its limited range.

60 GHz is used on wireless backhaul. Absorption problems limits its range, but
therwise works well.

Last night I was talking to a guy whose company makes radars for such
pplications as airfield ground surveillance. He says it operates on 77 GHZ. I
ad no idea that anyone was using frequencies that high.
