Les,
The LM series frequency meters are the US Navy contract frequency meters.
The US Navy had a nomenclature system of its own until in 1945 the JAN
(Joint Army-Navy) nomenclature was devised - and used the LM series in every
application, including airborne in that service.
The BC-221 series is the US Army nomenclature.
Most BC-221 models use batteries (some have issue AC power supplies that
fits in the battery compartment) while the LM series are stand-alone units,
using either a separate AC supply or connected to the receiver filament and
plate supplies, such as in the Navy ARB airborne receiver which has an
auxiliary connector from which the frequency meter can be powered.
The USAF, not being a separate branch like the Navy during WW2, had standard
Army Signal Corps radio equipment. For some airborne applications they used
a modified BC-221 which took the power from the BC-348 receiver's dynamotor
through a special cable.

John also mentions the "LM". This is a variant of the BC-221, in
other words a frequency meter, but UK (I think).
I've only seen one or two LMs. One (a rusted hulk) was bought for
restoration.
Collecting (and operating) these sets is a wonderful interest.
