Tom,
The freq will pull lower when the PA is engaged with the antenna so in
order to spot accurately enough for modern transceiver with CW filter to
hear you, one must spot under full output. On my T-22 the pulling is about
2.5KHz. If your antenna is tuned for a given impedance, then a dummy load
of the same impedance will pull the freq by the same amount. If your
transmitter came to you already modified and you don't mind keeping it that
way, a 50 ohm resistor plus switch could be installed internally for
spotting purposes. The resistor could be under-rated because spotting is
brief.
