What I have found to be most effective and completely reversible is to 
replace R-20, 2 megohms, the audio amp grid resistor, with an audio-taper 1 
or 2 megohm pot, connecting the lead from C-29 to the wiper of the pot.

I use RG-174 for the connections, grounding the shield at one point, usually 
at the tube-end.

Perhaps there is a better way, but IMHO, this method disturbs the original 
circuitry the least.
