In further reading of the Arnham book they mention a little bit about gliders communicating with towplanes.
I assume this was via the intercom.
And it was the glider pilots that decided when to cut loose, no doubt when they were informed they were over the target area.
There is some mention of the Rebecca Eureka teams as well.
You have to wonder why they did not use a CRC-7, although I don't know if the C-47's and other towplanes had VHF, I would guess they would in order to interface with the RAF interceptor systems
