There may be some sort of hysteresis going on  if the retrace is much faster than the trace. The IF lumped elements may exibit a different reactance during retrace. Thus develope a blanking signal during retrace for the Z axis and ignore it altogether.

OK. Here is the first photo of the successful accomplishment of my goal. The 
photo is a bit out-of-focus, the trace is not focussed well, etc. but it gives a 

pretty good idea of what is going on.

See the sweep retrace? Pretty crappy, huh?
