I won't quibble about the usefulness of modulation that was available in
all of the NT-74028 and only three BC-221 models. But the relative size of
the equipment isn't perhaps a fair comparison. All 26 BC-221 models were
originally dry battery operated. AFAIK, only two LM models (LM-13 and LM-17)
were. And they are about the same size as the BC-221. Of the balance of LM
models, about half are AC operated and take up about the same volume as a
BC-221. The remainder are DC operated in aircraft off of the aircraft buss for
LV and off of an associated receiver or transmitter for HV. These are the
only LM's that are more compact than most BC-221's. I say most instead of
all because the TS-164/AR (a BC-221 variant) is the same size as a DC
operated LM.
