All the arguments presented have been reasonable and logical, but I have a book, "B-17 Combat Missions" that shows a radio compartment of a restored B-17.  And the book also shows a BC-221 but says that "although standard on the B-17 it was often not carried - they were dead weight."

I have no idea where the author gets his information but he has written extensively on WWII aviation for many years now and no doubt interviewed many aircrew.  And I would be surprised if the B-17 radio operator ever touched the tuning of a BC-375 after takeoff.  Unlike the command set use they usually should have been communicating with the same stations on prearranged frequencies.
