Found it!
It is covered in detail in Hints and Kinks in QST for Feb 1957 on page 58.
Hammarlund engineer, Jack Schieder, provided this:
He suggests connecting a 3.3 pfd capacitor with "the highest negative
temperature coefficient available" from the stator terminal of the oscillator
section of the main tuning capacitor (the first section away from the panel) to
ground.
As I suggested earlier, a good BC-453 added to a BC-779 as a "Q-5er"
would help too.
