I believe that recall that the USS Pennsylvania on 7 Dec 1941 was being used as a radio controlled target ship.

Later In WWII both B-17's and B-24's were converted for radio control under Project Aphrodite.  The USAAF used the 17's and the USN the 24's.  Idea was a very large flying bomb to attack hardened targets such as sub pens and V-weapons sites.  They did use pilots for the takeoff portion of the flight.  Did not work very well; Joe Kennedy was killed flying one of those.
