Wayne -
My version R
IMO possibly weak tubes 6BM8 and or 6F7 may play a part.
If the 6BM8 tube has a weak diode, not enough AVC voltage may be
generated to counter the strong SSB signal?
If the 6F7 is weak the Osc may not provide enough mixing signal strength?
I have found that in some cases I have to switch to MGC.
