[ARC5] Trivial question. Meaning of "SCR"

I was always told when we were high school kids, it meant "Signal Corps
Radio" It was later replaced by the "joint Army Navy Nomenclature system
that allowed someone to tell just what the device or set was used for.
Also I gather the "BC" designation for almost every complete part of the old
"SCR"" system meant: "Basic Component", like the BC-221 or the receiver
BC-342, BC-312, etc. The problem with the SCR nomenclature is basically
NOTHING is there to describe just what the equipment was! Radio, Radar,
test equipment, whatever! At least the newer JAN system gives some idea of
what the system does.
