[ARC5] ARC-5 VHF in USAF Aircraft

Our old Air National Guard squadron had a couple of T-6's. As I remember
they had ARC-3 VHF sets in them. Ours were the 8 channel ones as I
remember. 8 cup shaped red buttons. We also used that set in the Douglas
B-26 aircraft too. Some of our aircraft had the old SCR-522 still in them.
Don't remember ANY UHF sets. Seems like we went into ARC-27's when we
finally got T-33's and F-80's in the transition to jet aircraft.

Yes, I remember Washing Machine Charlie from the Baa Baa Black Sheep series
on TV.
But I'm still trying to nail down what kind of VHF transceiver we had in
those 1955 SNJs with the red pushbuttons on the channel selector control
box. Arc-5 or ARC-something else?

That term was first used during WWI, I believe. It described the nightly
visits
by an enemy aircraft.
The Japanese did this regularly in the Pacific at some U.S. airfields.
Since
the Japanese often used twin-engined bombers with un-synchronized
engines, they were also called "Washing Machine Charlie".
