The C-118/ARC-3 control box had 8 red pushbuttons on it. Perhaps that is
  what you remember?

The much earlier SCR-522 also had a control box with red pushbuttons on it,
  but only 4.

The ARC-3s were used in many, many military aircraft up through about
  1960.
