That's an excellent suggestion. Corrosion certainly reduces the
extensibility of the outer sheath.
BTW, I find that the U. S. usage of the term "Bowden cable", at least in
the U. S. military manuals, seems to apply only to push/pull
applications like throttles and remote switching (the ARB radio
operator's control box switch comes to mind), rather than torsional
applications like tuning. Has anyone else noticed this? Perhaps the
divergence comes from the rotary cable design generally following the
seminal work by S.S. White in 1911 on the Ford speedometer? Maybe it
ought to be called the White tuning cable? It's one of those endless
speculation issues, I suppose.
