[ARC5] AD9850 DDS Freq. Syth Module

Has anyone here actually used one of these DDS modules
in a way that can be duplicated without
renting a full-up surface-mount factory for a few hours?
Haven't found much useful on Google:

If I have to etch a board and add 500 ittsy-bittsy parts
and tag-on a PC through a $200 interface, I pass.
I'll stick with the $5 programmable oscillators.
