It all comes down to how badly you want it, want to do it, whatever. A few
years back when I was still up north I drove from the central VT area to
the North Woods of Maine to pick up a pristine Navy ATC w/dynamotor and
some spares. Was early December as I recall, a pretty cold and barren time.
Stopped to visit Gary WZ1M in Orono on the way up, saw his shop and dropped
off a transformer for repair, then continued north to get the transmitter.
On the the trip home I stopped in Gray to see Larry/NE1S. Both stops added
a little time but were a nice way to break up the monotony of an otherwise
boring drive. Left around 7 or 8 AM, think I got back around 2AM the next
day.
The worst part of all is that I'd seen the transmitter at a hamfest 2
months earlier but had intentionally not brought much money along so I
wouldn't buy anything. A buddy with me was no help - he whipped out a roll
of cash and said 'buy it, or you'll regret not doing it. You'll never see
another one this clean' etc. I still declined, but I got the guy's info
which resulted in a loooong road trip.
Yes - I wanted that transmitter quite badly. Otherwise I'd have not
bothered. Wasn't willing to wait until the next hamfest either. Can't
remember the mileage but somewhere in the 600-700 range as I recall. Maine
is a lot like VT, there are certain areas where you can't get there from
here.
