[ARC5] Crystals in WWII

I work in the semiconductor industry. There is much work going on to
replace quartz with Si resonators (MEMS) but there has only been a small
dent in the quartz industry. Quartz turns out to be an excellent material
with a mature manufacturing science. It is cost effective with modern
equipment (the quartz used is man-made not natural rocks) and very
difficult to displace with other materials. The quartz industry today is
"not your father's Oldsmobile."
