You have a real jewel there. If you haven’t experienced an “RAL” on HF yet you will be truly amazed.
Frequency readout???? You are trying to “guild the lily” Sir! You must keep “logging scale” records and you will find that you can return to the exact frequency almost anytime you want! If you add ANY accessory to the RAL let it be a working “LM” Navy frequency meter!
I was STUPID when I was a kid in high school and didn’t listen to the old Navy Chiefs I knew! They also LOVED the RAL! At that time in my young life I was appalled at a receiver with NO DIRECT CALIBRATION”! You get “used” to the logging scale and truly surprised at how accurately you can get it back to that SSB net you like to listen to!
I should have gotten an RAL when I was seeing them at hamfests for next to nothing in spiffy spic and span like new condition. I saw one in a big Cardboard GI box (must have been surrounded at one time by a wood crate) for the price of $50 which I thought was insane at the time. Who would want to spend 50 bucks on a weary prewar designed receiver of such ancient antiquity? (That’s why I say I was “Stupid” at the time!)

Subject: RE: [Glowbugs] RAL-7
I have my RAL-7 and PS refurbished. I really like it but have 2 questions for the group:
1. I am using an old set of cans from that period that I believe are about 2000 ohms impedance. They work fine but I would like to use a speaker. What is needed to drive a speaker and what is the output impedance of the RAL at the phone jack?
2. Does anyone have experience with a way to add frequency readout?
Thanks for any help,
Mike KL7CD
