Yes, and they can oscillate, and they take up a lot of room, and they get

Yes, but stabilizing the voltage will eliminate some of the mechanical
instability.
I checked Mouser and 5 and 10 watt Zeners are really, really cheap and take
up a heck of a lot less room than VR tubes....but they are so darned ugly.
Still, the power supplies I have here for the receivers are pretty compact, so I
may just go with Zeners anyway. It would sure be simpler.
Might as well make the power supplies as capable as possible. It will come in
handy down the road.
