[ARC5] Inspired Hack Job

It probably works at least as well as most commercial equipment available at the time and certainly a lot better than my old Halli S-38 or Hammi 129-X. Stability, selectivity and the ability to read frequency down to less than one kc was extremely expensive. Collins 75? You could buy a new car for the price!! Here you have 95% of the state-of-the-art performance for $5 or $10 and a lot of sweat!! In those days my mom could feed a family of four with less than $45 a week, so even then the conversion was not cheap. Uncle Sam paid about $5000. for a new R-390, a price which would have bought you a house in the town where I grew up. The 10 meter BC-454 is a thing of historical interest in and of it's own right. Using it is like Saturday night cruising in your neat old car. Is that worth the effort? Wanna drag?
