Well, unfortunately in this case, they were using a hydrogen fuel-cell for 
power, provided by the EE folks at Washington State University, so every 
contact they made was on "alternate power".

That would have been the AN/GRC-9, a really neat rig. I also have a DY-88 
and a PE-162 for power here for the '109. I have my GN-58 built into a 
bicycle-drive system.

I have an SB-102 and an HW-101 here. Both work at least as well as the 
average rice-box. I even have Heathkit DC-DC supplies for both. So, I could 
run them on batteries.

That is typical. Apparently, the local club isn't particularly interested in the 
score...which to my way of thinking is backwards from what it should be.

Thanks, Howie, but I can't travel that far at this point. Too many family 
responsibilities. I have contacted the only fellow I know of in the area who 
feels as I do. We'll see what transpires between now and next year.

As I said, I am still pissed. What a bunch of dead-heads! :-(
