"Weak signal work" with which I am familiar was digging incredibly 
small signals out of the noise at 189 KC.  Lowfer stuff back in the 80s.
I set some early records on that band, usually with only the "wet filter."
Success was dependant on three things:  
    Long-term frequency stability / calibration to 10 Hz,
    low noise floor and hard-headed perseverance ;-)

I would not have attempted to set DX records there
with anything like a BC-453 et al.  
Would have been a waste of time and effort.   
I love these old Command rigs, but they just aren't suited to that role.
Would be like trying to plant roses with a bucket loader.
