Ken,

Bob Keys (is he on this list?) runs an RAL as his CW receiver of choice on HF.  You  may know it's a pre-WW-II TRF radio that uses 6D6's for the RF stages.  He likes to run the whole radio on batteries - claims the noise from the receiver is quite a bit reduced.  I have not tried it - yet.  Have you ever used an RAL or RAK?  I would like to substitute the Western Electric equivalent tubes for the ones in the RAL, though I don't know if I have both of the types needed (they are *very* expensive to buy!).

One of the members on the R-390 list who is most experienced with them (Roger Ruszkowski) tells about swapping tubes around to get better signal to noise performance.  His customers were mostly RTTY users of fleet broadcasts, and some "spook" types who really wanted the best low level signal performance they could get.

Both these tales point to the idea that others with long experience agree with you.
