No. You most certainly are NOT nuts. How you got even 10 watts out of that 
mess is simply beyond me. It looks to me as though that coil had never been 
there. Another 70+ year old assembly error?

Furthermore, I would have NEVER expected such a problem!

Fixing that is going to be a real problem, however. Maybe you should just 
beg, borrow, buy, or steal a good plate coil from someone else and just 
replace it? It ain't that hard.
