Good on ya!  (I'm not yet 71, but it won't be too long!)

The suggestion I've heard is to use an UNcoated aspirin tablet as cleaner/flux.  Clean well after soldering.

Ken has told me he used acetone applied with a Q tip.  If the "varnish" on the strands is soluble in acetone, great!

Another trick I've heard of is to hold the wire *briefly* in the flame of a match.  I"d be very careful with that one.
