[ARC5] B-36J Radio Operator Position

Man..if the flight engineer had to take hourly logs on all those gauges, he
would need an hour and a half for each set!

Wonder what stuff was installed in those vacant racks in the radio ops
position? And what are all those units with what looks like three fat metal
tube envelopes, or shield cans, and a another fourth can slighty apart form the
rest? There are a number of them located all around the overhead. And what
radio used the control panel labelled LIASON? Looks like it had a large number
of channels. ARC-58?

I did my basic training at Lackland AFB right diwn the road from Kelly field.
Nothing like watching a takeoff of one with six turning and four burning! They
ALWAYS had very distinct engine /propellor "beat". Only thing that sounded
somewhat similar was a high flying C-124. The B=36 seemed have a sound that was
resonant in some rooms of the house. You could recognize it in an instant. I
used to delight in running outside and see a B-36 waaaayup there smetime
chalking their way across the sky! Beautiful sight.

People raved over the B52, but the B36 had a "special charm and attraction to
it! The engineer's panels are very awesome! I wished I could have gotten
aboard the B-36 that was at Wright Patterson one Dayton Fest! That trip to the
base was the highlight of the whole trip!

Send me the comparison photos of the B29/ B-36 if you can. Cockpit views were
very awesome o\n the B-36!

73,

Sandy W5TVW

Those are great photos and from WrightPat I believe. I got VIP treatment for
a few years when my #2 son was stationed there and I went to the Dayton
Hamvention.

As a kid living on Long Island NY I used to get goose bumps watching B-36's
fly over in formation heading into Mitchel Field.

I also have a photo of a B-29 snuggled next to a B-36 for size comparison
taken at Carswell AFB in 1948 on one of the PC's here. I can send a copy to
anyone who would like it

Carl
