Well, there is at least one clue in the RAT manual that describes the 
use of the 7918 (I-84) five meter test panel as the *first* to be used 
in a series of checks before delving into the receiver on a tube by tube 
basis.  Apparently someone must have considered it important enough to 
include it at that point as part of the maintenance procedure.  At least 
it might have quickly helped identify a problem with the receiver before 
it became smoke filled...:-)   It is the only reference I could find 
that actually pinned down a spot in the maintenance process to measure 
the screen voltage.
