I don't recall hearing about that before, but would be very interested to know the citation if someone finds it. Please post the info!
Truth be told, I wouldn't dismiss the idea.
To expand on this just a little:
The "o-fishal" goobermint record regarding German spies landing in the USA says that there were only two, in Florida and on Long Island, and that both were foiled quickly... but I have seen bits of information that lead me to believe there could have been more, particularly along the NC Outer Banks. Indeed, there is at least some to suggest that the submarine U-85, sunk close inshore in April 1942, may have been surprised in the act of putting a team over the side in rubber rafts when along came the USS Roper, a DD which had spotted the sub on radar. There's a lot regarding the story of the U-85 sinking which will make one wonder about this.
It isn't the only story either.
Do YOU believe your goobermint?

Subject: [ARC5] Off topic-torpedoes
Hate to resurrect an off topic subject, but concerning
the recent thread about the WWII torpedo scandal, I
have a question.
I read a book many years ago, that stated there was a German
side of the torpedo story, in that German espionage had
infiltrated the torpedo factory, and knew the Navy's
torpedoes were faulty.
Question is, anyone else read that, and what book was it?
Thanks
Jack Antonio
