The main (and only) torpedo factory in the entire U.S. at that time was in
Rhode Island. Those connected with it did everything they possibly could to
obscruct not only testing of the torpedoes they made, but to obstruct
construction of another factory anywhere else in the U.S.
I hold them personally responsible for the deaths of many Navy and Airmen
due to the crap torpedoes they built. I firmly believe they set our operations
in the Pacific (at least) and elsewhere back at least a year. How many
casualties did we suffer during that period?
The Rhode Island congressional delegation was particularly adept at
obstructing matters.
As one of our other members pointed out, at the time, we NEEDED 1500
torpedoes (per day/week/month/whatever) when they were outputting the
astonishing number of 50, and were obstructing the construction of any other
facility to make them.
