The circuit shown on the SX-140 schematic is absolutely identical with the 
one I just mentioned.

The author of the "73 Diode Circuits Handbook" was Paul Franson 
WA1CCH.  According to QRZ.com, that call is no longer active.

The publication date for the Handbook was around 1968 or so.

If HappyCrappers was still in business then, perhaps he was working there.
