I apologize, Bill: I wasn't accurate. That stage, the 2nd IF, does not have the 
AVC connected to it, nor the gain control. The very rudimentary (in that 
model) AVC and the gain-control line are connected only to the 1st IF stage.

After a very short discussion with Dennis, I am reasonably sure that the 
reason Lew McCoy (not Demaw) used the 2nd IF is to make his mod as 
simple as possible.

If one were to use the 1st IF stage, one would have to disconnect the gain 
control line.
