Yes, but that was a very short article, originally printed in CQ magazine, that 
left a lot to the imagination.

This particular receiver was "modified" (or at least the modification was 
begun) according to a much longer and more detailed article which was 
printed in the Surplus Perversion Manual # 2. Many of the details are alike, 
but many others are not.

For instance, in the Manual # 2 article, all plates are removed from the rotor 
except the end plates with the slots in them, rather than BOTH rotor and 
stator plates as you describe above.

Yes. Both articles do something similar....which is rather odd considering that 
the stock receivers have a form of AVC, and it is very simple to add a more 
effective one by using the unused other plate in the detector/BFO tube that is 
normally simply grounded.
