[ARC5] "Poor Man's Q-multiplier"

This is from an article by Doug DeMaw in a 1950s QST magazine.

He makes the 2nd IF stage in a BC-453 regenerative. He also brings up a
point I wondered about which I will mention later.

The first thing that I wonder about is why the 2nd IF stage, and not the 1st
IF?

I have always thought that higher selectivity should be as close to the mixer
as possible.

So, why the 2nd IF stage in his unit?

Secondly, I see that ARC has connected the suppressor grids of all three
12SK7s to the cathodes, which are also connected to the gain control line.
This means the suppressors are at the same non-zero voltage as the
cathodes.

Why did they do this instead of grounding the suppressor grids directly? Is
there an advantage to doing it their way, or would it be better to ground them
directly?
