John,

Carbon is found in many forms, from diamond to walking human beings  
and ancient trees.  I think he means the stuff that is found as dust  
after the brushes in the dynamotor wear down a bit.  I would expect  
that under a microscope the black dust would appear as irregular,  
hard, granules that be quite abrasive, whereas graphite as used in  
lubricants would be flat, thin, wafer-like particles that would be  
quite slippery.  Some clay is like that.
