Just dawned on me.... do you have a scope? Can you scope the B+ buss while tapping? Turn the audio all the way down so audio PA doesn't load the buss. Hi-Z power supply feed (either hot or ground) will "wobbleate" the B+ and that will modulate the LO and the BFO.
