I've only been doing this for about 52 years. The manuals that I referred
to are properly printed with photographs, properly printed chocolate brown
covers and properly glued bindings. They were printed before the NAVAER
numbering system was lit off. I have several dozen of the early preliminary
manuals like you described. If these had been some of those, I would have said
so. Generally, if a no-number manual got assigned a NAVAER number stamped
on a white stick-on label, it meant that the Navy had decided that there was
no need to print a new manual. As an example, most of the early model LM
manuals are like this. Even some of the black mimeographed manuals fall into
this category, especially those on DF sets.
