Yes, the 6AG7 is a very excellent oscillator tube, and was used in many, 
many oscillators, both crystal and VFO.

But, yes, I have in my collection of old ARRL handbooks several articles 
detailing VFOs built with the 6AC7, and also with the 6SK7, as Carl 
mentions.

The 802 was also popular and the 837 was used by the Navy as a very good 
VFO tube.
