Well!!!

The two tuned circuits, RF amp plate (resonates at 24 MHz) and the mixer grid (resonates at 
above 60 MHz with the tuning cap (what's left of it) all the way closed) are a real problem.

Amazing that there is any energy transfer from the RF amp to the mixer at all...

I am guessing that since the RF amp plate has no variable trimmer associated with it at all, 
that the circuit should be tuned to about the center of the band of interest. It is interesting that 
there is no adjustment for that short of changing turns on the coil. It must be pretty broad-
banded.

Obviously, the mixer grid should tune the band of interest which is 28 to 30 MHz in this case.

What a kludge! Gee...
