As someone here said, they are the receiver portion of a 4 channel
multiplexed system. The AN/TRC-1 system was first implemented around
1944, and was considered (and actually WAS) very advanced for the day.
The entire system was "portable" in the sense that it could be packed up and
moved, but was very heavy overall, weighing on the order of at least one ton.
It was used very effectively during the Sicilian campaign. I have a complete
manual on this system, and have an article from (as I remember it, Electric
Radio Magazine) on its use.
The receiver, transmitter, power supplies, and 250 watt amplifier were
mounted in large-ish wooden box/carrying cases which also formed
operating desks with sun/rain shades. There were 4 yagi antennas included
in the system, a PE-75 (?) 2500 watt 110 VAC generator, 30 foot tall antenna
masts and guying systems included, plus all the necessary cabling.
To my way of thinking about it, the entire TRC-1 system was historically, and
technologically, unique and very, very advanced, especially for the time
period.
The TRC-8 system was an even more advanced and capable upgrade of the
TRC-1 system.
