Bob,
Where are you located? I recall those things as being rather heavy.
When I was in High School there was a ton of military surplus com and test gear in the physics lab storage area. Not unusual given that Ft. Monmouth was 2-3 miles away.
The physics teacher had for several months a TRC-1 receiver torn apart on one of the lab benches. When I asked about it he showed me the schematics in the ™ and the schematics and notes he had developed to convert it into "a broadcast-quality" FM tuner.
He also showed me the manual for his REL (Radio Engineering Laboratory) top-of -the-line (when it was marketed) FM Broadcast Monitor that he used at home. He seriously loved that REL tuner and he had spent quite some time looking for another one to use in the physics lab.
Being unable to locate a second REL was the impetus of his TRC-1 project.
Unfortunately I lost touch with him and I never got to witness the results of his project. I seem to recall that in addition to trimming some of the front-end inductors, etc. to tune the 88-108 Mc range, he spoke of modifying the IF bandwidth and removing or installing a limiter stage or two. I don't recall any discussion regarding the detector.
Can anyone opine on the feasibility of such a conversion?
Is anyone aware of any published conversion?
If it's feasible I'd like to pick up a pre-hacked TRC-1 to play with. I wouldn't want to destroy a "good" or better survivor.
Also, I was so impressed with his REL that I bought one about 25 years ago and, like the physics teacher, I'd like to find a second one.
If anyone has one they would part with I'd be interested in hearing about it.
73,
Rick
